Description & evaluation criteria
The category Construction & Living addresses the important housing market and the construction industry in
total. It focuses on ecological and resource-conserving projects – both in the industrial and private sector.
Starting with innovative architectural concepts, new materials and construction methods, house technology and
interior installations, concrete construction projects for housing estates and commercial real estates or questions
of renovation up to the ecological demolition, diverse submissions are possible and welcome.
The huge project “Energiewende” becomes more concrete, but many questions are still unanswered. We are
looking for approaches to how energy can be used and implemented more efficiently, user-friendly, and
innovatively – from energy generation to transmission, from increasing the efficiency to storage, from fuels to
decentralized solutions. Target groups of innovations can be both private customers and industry.
The “Galileo Wissenspreis” awards projects and initiatives that make our lives in our environment more
harmonious or help protect the environment. The focus is on inventions and ideas for a more sustainable and
environmentally friendly lifestyle, in particular the combination of daily life, commitment and technology. The
“Galileo Wissenspreis” is endowed with 5,000 euros.
Trends shape our daily lifestyle, they are the expression of changes in our society. In the category Lifestyle we
award ideas, products, concepts, events, campaigns and other formats that inspire consumers to lead a green
lifestyle: cosmetics, leisure, exercise, health, food and much more – the thematic spectrum is broad.
Environment and mobility have been the focus of attention for years. The degree of mobility of the world's
population is growing, resources are becoming scarcer and emissions such as exhaust fumes and noise can be
significantly reduced today. In the category Mobility, the GreenTec Awards honor technological innovations
(weight reduction, optimization of consumption, lifecycle prolongation, production, materials), environmentally
friendly mobility concepts and services for all motor vehicles.
Recycling is the oldest environmental technology, but due to the scarcity of raw materials and climate change it
is more relevant than ever. Innovative recycling deals with new questions: How are valuable wastes converted as
completely as possible into secondary raw materials? How do you consider the potential for secondary recycling
in the design of new products already? How do you manage to regain valuable raw materials that are difficult to
separate, such as rare earths? How can new concepts such as Urban Mining and UpCycling be promoted?
In 2018, the GreenTec Awards once again award the category Special Prize Start-up for young companies and initiatives. The aim of the Special Prize is to promote entrepreneurship and promising start-ups that contribute to environmental protection and resource conservation, as well as to support the winner project and it forward. Any application in one of the categories by companies younger than 3 years automatically and additionally qualify for the category Special Prize Start-up.
Sport belongs to us. With sports we do ourselves and our bodies good. The concept of combining physical fitness
and environmental protection, and extending the positive as a matter of course, is obvious. The enthusiasm for top
sports and the popularity of athletes can help to promote sustainable issues. We are looking for creative
concepts, ideas, products and projects in which not only the joy of sport is expressed, but also a contribution to
environmental protection. Welcome are submissions from sports equipment, to sports facilities, operators and
concepts, to examples of broad sports or top athletes with environmental initiatives. Athletes are exempted from
the application fee.
Clean water is a valuable resource and unfortunately still a luxury asset for millions of people. But not only do
people need clean drinking water, but also in the areas of household, business and industry, we are dependent on
it. Daily water consumption in Germany is around 123 liters per inhabitant. High-quality water supply, careful
handling of water and environmentally sound wastewater are prerequisites for sustainable development
worldwide. The GreenTec Awards honor projects that promote the responsible use of water, improve the treatment
of drinking water and industrial water, as well as sewage water.
